But, there is no real hard evidence of this, which causes this idea to veer a bit into fandom cliché. In From the Abyss, tanacawyr weaves a very realistic tale of Archie’s abuse under Simpson, how his seizures began, and his feelings towards a new midshipman’s arrival.

Major Edrington appeared in the "Frogs and Lobsters/The Wrong War" film and is really fun to watch and read, so he is the focus of this rec. Author's description is much better than mine could be: "Forced to march together during a retreat, Sharpe and Edrington are cut off from the army and must make their way back through country controlled by the French. In the process, they share far more than just the hardships of war." It's really a great story and makes me want to run and find all the Sharpe (and Edrington!) I can get my hands on.
