Title: nobody's birthday

Author: Merry ([livejournal.com profile] merryish and her popslash at anyroad.org)
Characters: JC Chasez, Joey Fatone, other members of *NSYNC, etc.
Prompt: 42. Holiday
Rating: R
Length: medium (5095 words)
Summary: Oh, oh. Merry writes such a wonderful JC, not too complex and not too simple, but sensual and always pleasuring in the pleasure of others. This story is about JC and how he loves Joey. The holiday parts are in the beginning, and it's just so happy and warm and perfect all the way through. The content that JC feels in this story, the appreciation and the friendship, it all feels very real, insofar as JC may not actually be gay with Joey. If JC was gay with Joey, this is how he would be gay with him. And that is so how they would spend Christmas.

Summary: The best summary of this story is on the page itself. This is a finely crafted JC and Bobbie, gorgeously oblivious to everyone's reactions to their style: looking like trash and fucking like treasure. To quote: Wonderful, horrible devastation; fabulous, fabulous clothes. If JC's not a little like this on the inside, I would be very surprised.

Author: Rhys ([livejournal.com profile] rhyssj and at Experiment V)
Characters: JC Chasez, Joey Fatone, Brianna Fatone (note: spelled "Briahna" in real life but "Brianna" in this story)
Prompt: 24. Future fic
Rating: R
Length: long (14,084 words)
Summary: Joey and JC try their hands at a relationship that didn't work in the past and settle into happy domesticity, along with Joey's kid. Set seven years in the future (although it was farther away when it was written). Rhys has many great JCs to choose from, and this story is nominally a Joey story, but I love this particular characterization of JC because it emphasizes the nurturer in him. JC in this story is steadfast and loving, two aspects of his personality that I fully believe in, and they rarely get highlighted in a way that doesn't lapse into full-blown stereotypicality. This JC isn't over-the-top, but is exactly as patient as he needs to be, and he's rewarded at the end with Joey's realization that growing old doesn't mean losing the things you love. And yes, this made me cry a bit. What?!

Author: Helenish ([livejournal.com profile] helenish and at Oh, the humanity)
Characters: JC Chasez, Lance Bass, Joey Fatone, Chris Kirkpatrick, Justin Timberlake
Prompt: 26. Death
Rating: R
Length: long (15,935 words)
Summary: Also known as the gangster AU where everybody . . . well, but I won't ruin it for anyone who hasn't read it. Joey's a gangster who owns a nightclub. JC's his bit on the side, the jazz singer at the club. Chris is Joey's contract killer. Lance is Joey's right-hand man. And Justin is Chris's whore. And it all works, it really, really does. There's just enough detail to let you picture it in your head and everyone speaks just as much as they should, and the POV changes are just long enough to slip you inside their heads. There is deep angst and deep love, and JC is a jazz singer in rumpled shirt-sleeves and fraying khakis turned up at the ankle, and he keeps his heart in his throat. If JC lived in this world, this is exactly who JC would be, which is just about as high as praise gets for characterization in AUs.

Characters: JC Chasez, Chris Kirkpatrick, Britney Spears, other *NSYNC members and Backstreet Boys
Prompt: 44. Masked
Rating: PG
Length: long (9624 words)
Summary: Reality TV AU! JC’s picked to be a contestant on that show where the guys wear masks and the girl picks them based on their personalities – yeah, right. On the show, JC meets Chris, they make each other’s time on the show more bearable and of course by the show’s end, JC has to determine what he wants and why. You see a lot of JC characterizations where he doesn’t really know what he wants or why he wants it, but this one progresses very nicely from a JC with no purpose to a JC with a reason for wanting something, and the end is ridiculously sweet.

Characters: JC Chasez, Chris Kirkpatrick

Length: medium (2046 words)
Summary: JC's Orlando house was one of the casualties of the 2004 hurricane season – "Like, I had this humongous crane at my house because the tree that fell into my house was probably like, what - anywhere between sixty and a hundred thousand pounds." (<- actual JC quote) Mintwitch describes JC's journey through the aftermath of this traumatic event, from sleeping in his Jeep to cultivating some penicillin bread. And then Chris comes to save him. This is so inside JC's head, it's frightening. And I mean that on several levels. :)

Characters: JC Chasez, Lance Bass, Chris Kirkpatrick
Prompt: 23. Time
Rating: R
Length: long (15,036 words)
Summary: Lance comes to visit JC for a single day – for twenty-three hours, actually – because what good is being rich and famous if you don't take advantage of the ability to do that? As the hours pass, both JC's POV and Lance's POV recount their history and their future, and it's just a comfortable and familiar slice of life. They go out to dinner, they have sex, JC gives a radio interview while Lance gives him a footrub, and there's lots of thinking and reminiscing interwoven into the narrative. What's wonderful about this story is how the exposition fits into the internal monologues of both JC and Lance. You can see the possibilities as they see them, and you can feel the night passing as they experience it. JC's characterization is a great blend of random, intelligent, freaky, artistic – everything we love about JC, expressed through his thoughts and actions, and through the lens of Lance's observation.

Rating: generally PG-13, sometimes NC-17
Length: incredibly epic, can be considered WIP
Summary: An amazingly inspired spoof of "Bridget Jones's Diary", this fake LiveJournal of JC's recounts his love affair with Chris Lance cigarettes coffee himself coffee. Loosely following real-life events and alternately side-splittingly hilarious and touching, JC sleeps with half of gay LA, insults ¾ of gay LA, marries a bandmate, screws a bandmate's boyfriend, travels the world, enters therapy, cannot cook, and does everything that we would totally do if we were JC. Rating: PG
Length: short (432 words)

Characters: JC Chasez, Lance Bass, Chris Kirkpatrick, Joey Fatone, Justin Timberlake
Prompt: 20. Non-con
Rating: PG-13
Length: longish (5 sections)
Summary: So I'm using an alternative definition of non-consensual for this rec, because honestly, no one consents to losing this game – no one except JC, really, and the grace and depth of his acquiescence is a perfect counterpoint to everyone else's fight and surrender. The five sections of this story come together to create a cohesive portrait of the group dynamic while they play variations of Murder – you know, the one you played in kindergarten. This story is about so much more than passing the time when you're bored and in a boyband. This is about relationships and friendships and fear of failure and fear of love. JC here has a tenuously steady confidence in himself, but a remarkable confidence in everyone else, and he doesn't want to lose, but it's lovely when he does and it's lovely when he doesn't.

Summary: The boys are young and cold in their German hotel room. There is but one solution: everyone spoon up on one bed, get hard, and hump each other 'til sweet, warm release! It's Justin's first circle-jerk equivalent, and he's crushing on JC, who stays very sweetly focused on him throughout the whole thing, keeping him relaxed, in the moment, and not letting Joey make him feel too young. You've got a JC who's patient here, but who is still keenly invested in getting off and helping Justin get off, and that, my friends, is very hot.

Length: short (1752 words)
Summary: I felt a little funny reccing this as crack!fic, since I actually really love this story. But someone wise told me that what passes for crack!fic in other fandoms is the sort of stuff you get every day in popslash, so a JC/Jesus story is good to go in that aspect. I mean, it's JC/Jesus, sort of, and there's no explanation as to how JC is back in Jesus' time, and there's little-to-no exposition, it's all very immediate and emotional and sensory on JC's part. It's just JC needing and Jesus giving. But hey, for those who swing that way, that's what it's all about.

Author: Calico ([livejournal.com profile] ukcalico and at temporary insanity)
Characters: JC Chasez, Chris Kirkpatrick
Prompt: 21. Epiphany
Rating: NC-17
Length: medium (4426 words)
Summary: JC turns into a girl and he and Chris make it on the hood of Justin's Mercedes. Being inside JC's head for the duration of this story is intensely hot, because he's having sex with Chris, which is intensely hot anyway, plus he's got all these new girl-sensations to sift through and weigh – which, being JC, he does, even as he's getting felt up. Calico is an incredibly deft writer, and she blends exposition and emotion into the sex. Throughout the story, JC is ¾ very turned-on and wanting everything that's happening to him and ¼ wondering if Chris is only this attentive because JC's suddenly a girl. The turning-into-a-girl part really isn't the focus of the story, of course, it's JC's reactions to everything, his insecurity and his need and his observation. The epiphany comes at the end, when JC gets the answer to his unvoiced question, and it's a lovely little epiphany.

Summary: I chose this story for JC's character study because the whole thing explores the most important thing about fannish!JC – how he interacts sexually with his bandmates. It's funny and it's hot, and JC's contemplative and reckless and careful and careless and new-age and thinks he knows what's going on. This is definitely not torch's most recced JC, but JC is often deliciously written as in control, especially in a JC/Justin story, and this is one of the finest, most acute examples of JC's mastery over his and Justin's relationship.
