Brief summary: It's hard for established relationship stories to hook me, as that slow build of 'the first time' isn't there. The sex and relationship is frequently tacked on in these kind of stories, and not integrated into the plot such that the action stops, there is sex, and then the action starts up again. There is little at risk for the characters either for their relationship or for themselves.

It's also the total antithesis of this story.

In Constitutional Crisis there is a ton of risk, to the characters, the relationship, and to Atlantis. The sex is hot (incredibly hot. This is one of my favorite sex scenes.) and it moves the plot along in an intense, tightly-packed story of John's breakdown over "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" regulations and its aftermath -- along with a little dash of what friendship really means. It also does a great job of playing with the universe.

Brief Summary: Mulder/Reyes as a pairing in fanfic is almost nonexistant. *Good* Mulder/Reyes...well, you get the picture. ;-) For someone like me who has a not-so-closet fondness for the pairing, a story like this is a treasure to say the least. Of course, the MSR and DRR are extremely present in their absence--to put it bluntly, it's a mutual comfort fic set after both John and Dana have died, along with most of the world's population, and Mulder and Monica's memories are not censored--but in all honesty, that's probably the only way it would realistically happen. What makes it not only bearable but compelling despite my own personal distaste for DRR in particular is the compassion Maidenjedi has for the characters, and how well she knows them, even to the point of knowing that Monica would eventually move on and cease to be haunted by her dead lover, but Mulder never would.

In this story, Fraser and Ray are having a long distance pseudo-relationship post-COTW, and neither of them is happy, and they can’t talk about it. They go through visits to each other, and Ray is torn apart by his feelings for Fraser, not knowing exactly what they are to each other, and being apart. Very real, and very hard to read, but really and truly wonderful.

A dominant Ray and a submissive Fraser, not what I would expect and not what you see most often, but it works here. And, the image of a naked Fraser in a leather collar pretty much gets me every time. So, yeah. GUH.
