Excerpt:
Night came, and with it, the cool. The lion awoke, stretched, yawned his widest yawn. The tiger rolled sideways, pressing his paws against the lion’s side. He yawned, too. “I don’t want to be rude, but when did you lose your stripes?”
“When I was just a cub.”
“Ah. And when did you grow that hair around your head?”
“When I started growing up. Why are you asking all these questions?”
“I just think it’s a little strange for a tiger.”
The lion snorted. “Yeah, it would be. I’m a lion.”
The tiger blinked at him. “No, you’re a tiger.”
“I’m a lion. Haven’t you noticed? We’re different. We’ve been different since you moved into the cage opposite and we started trading insults.”
The tiger gave a little snort and shook his head. “You smell funny, and you lost your stripes, but you’re still a tiger.”
