Big Damn Table of River recs, 6/50
Claim: Firefly, River Tam
Title: Sleepwalker
Author:
bradcpu
Characters: River, crew
Prompt: Character Study
Rating: PG/T
Length: Short
Brief summary: This well-crafted short character study follows River's mind through one of her "bad days" during the series. It's beautifully written, crazy with just a touch of deeper understanding, and for all that she's insane, you feel that everything River does has a purpose, at least in her mind. This is exactly what I imagine River would do and see.

Title: Jiě Tuō
Author:
mjules
Characters: River, Mal
Prompt: Teamwork
Rating: PG
Length: Short [~900 words]
Brief summary: This story is a beautiful beginning to a completely believable River/Mal relationship, post-Serenity. Mal's view of River, healed cracks and all, is lovely and very IC; her words to him are more sane than not, with just a touch of madness. Just, really, go read it. It's only about 900 words, and Jules is a much better writer than me.

"What the hell’s she sayin’?"
"It’s just a bad day."
No one can understand. They’re all part of the whole, but she’s alone behind the screaming. Disconnected. The disease that makes the peace wilt. Time to go.
A hand grabs her wrist and pulls the silver away. The captain is here, holding her by the shoulders.
"Ain’t nobody on this boat alone, dong ma? We’re all family here, and you’re a part of that family whether you want to be or not. Serenity’s your home same as ours."
People are crying. Warmth enfolds her.
"Nobody here is alone. Nobody."
There’s the familiar pinch of a needle, then blackness.

Do I have a kill command? she asked again, silently, with her eyes, and this time he heard her clearly, knew it was her, knew she was ready to spin around and take on an entire army of fully-armored, fully-armed, specially trained soldiers with her bare arms and legs and two wicked blades.
He was torn. If he said no, there was every possibility that the Operative’s voice would come ringing through their comms at any moment and they’d all lyin’ in a ruined heap in the blink of an eye. But if he said yes, there was a good chance she’d never be able to dodge all those bullets, and --
But I could save them -- SimonKayleeZoeJayneInarayou.
