Brief summary: Aukestrel herself called this story “godawful schmoop,” but it’s well-written, effective, and enjoyable schmoop. Set 10 years post-COTW, Ray and Fraser live together in Canada. This is a snapshot of a day in their life together. Ray’s voice is very well done, and it’s wonderful and definitely schmoopy to see Ray reflect on the last 10 years with Fraser and to see how they’ve settled. I think the reason there are so many post-COTW stories in the fandom is because we all want to know what happened to them after they rode off on their Adventure. This gives us the very lovely happy ending that we wish for them.
Ten years. Wow. Made it past the first seven – those are the hardest, right? Hell, made it past the first. We both deserve medals for that, tuck-in-on-the-floor-hurt-my-soul medals. Gave me a whole new perspective on the Stella, I can tell you that. Partners means sharing, how many times did he have to hear it before it sank into that thick skull? Four hundred eighty seven and a half, he says, and then he laughs. Private joke, whatever. Don't get him started on dogsleds at the border, he'll giggle all night.
Yeah, the first year was the hardest and the easiest, all at once, kind of how he is. Had rip roaring fights, you'd be surprised to hear the sarcasm he can pull out of his Stetson when he's riled up, but riled is good, riled means you're under his skin, and the sex carried us through. Not supposed to, no, Stella always said, always, sex didn't solve anything. It might have if she'd let it because it worked for him and me, but maybe it's different for guys. Nothing like getting laid to put a new perspective on empty butter dishes and milk cartons and the whole partnership thing. Nothing like after-lay for a few contented grunts and a word or two that made it all go away, no nasty afterbites, made it all go away for good.
And it did. Kept getting better, we still had that connection, still have that connection, and that's how we do it, him and me, body and soul, both ways in and back again.

Characters: Fraser, Ray
Prompt: 16. Teamwork
Rating: G
Length: short
Brief summary: Kat Allison is an astoundingly talented writer. This is a small snippet of Ray and Fraser shoveling the sidewalk outside the Consulate. They disagree on method and, as usual, have a competition. So much of the due South (the show and the fandom) is about how well Ray and Fraser work together, in whatever way you take that. This story isn’t about much, per se, but Kat’s writing and imagery, and her portrayal of Ray and Fraser working together, however innocuous the situation, is pitch perfect.
When Ray reached the spot that Fraser had already cleared, he made a sideways heave and dumped the great heap of snow he'd accumulated haphazardly into the street. "There." He grinned, wiped his face, and gestured toward the wavering blade's-width path that stretched back toward the corner. "Done. So, move it and finish up yours, Fraser, there's a pizza out there with my name on it."
"Well, Ray, that's a decent beginning." Fraser removed his hat, shook off the snow that had settled on it, put it back on. "Now all you need to do is go back and clear each side, all the way to the edge."
"No way." Though the protest sounded heartfelt, Ray did not, Fraser noted, seem entirely surprised. "You said people gotta have a place to walk, so OK, they got it, they need more room than that, they shouldn't be out on the street."
"The correct procedure for clearing a sidewalk, Ray, is edge to edge, and down to the pavement. Like this." Fraser aligned the edge of his blade at a precise 90 degrees, slid it until it met the grass verge, lifted a clean rectangular block of snow, and deposited it tidily to the side. He straightened and turned to face Ray. "You see?"
"Edge to edge." But there was some affection underlying the mockery in Ray's voice. "That in your, uh, Canadian regulations book or something?"
