Brief summary: This is a classic among Backstreet stories, and deservedly so. We get to follow Nick from the start of the group and see how he grows and changes, how the group's career influences his growing up, and how his friendships and crushes and relationships affect the other Boys. A well-written, compelling story that only gets better upon re-reading.
The one thing Nick has always counted on is being treated like an adult. His parents do it, his siblings do it, and the people he auditions for sure as hell expect he acts like one. When Lou squeezed his hand, and smiled, and welcomed him to the group, a group meant mostly for "male singers that move well between 16-19 years of age," he figured it would be the same. But AJ and Howie ruffle his hair and call him baby, and Kevin is, like, 21 or something, and he just knows this new guy, Brian, is gonna be the same.
Nick hates being babied. He hasn't been a baby for a long time, and he doesn't understand why he should start now, just because suddenly four strangers think he will.
He should've joined the Mouse Club.

When AJ suddenly gives up his hankering after Nick and starts a relationship with Howie, Nick gets upset and jelous and concotes a plan to get AJ back. It's not a very good plan, but that doesn't really matter, in the end everyone gets what they want and need anyway. This story makes me happy, and the sex scenes are great too.
Nick threw his sneaker at the wall, watching it hit with an angry thud and fall behind Brian's bed. Howie was sleeping with AJ. Howie was an easy slut. Bastard. It had only taken two weeks of AJ's attention and Howie hopped into his bed. Nick had had AJ's attention for years. Years and Nick hadn't done a damn thing about it.
Why? Nick threw his other sneaker and Brian made a sound of protest. Why hadn't he done anything? Because it was AJ and it would mess with the group and he had been young. But mostly because he hadn't really known he'd even wanted it. He hadn't known until it was gone and he was left with this hurt and jealousy and emptiness. He'd thought that AJ would keep loving him for years to come.
