Brief summary:
This is a very violent and very amazing AU that still maintains the magical Hogwartian setting. Its structure, theme and basic plot derive from a great British gangster flick named “Gangster No. 1”, starring David Thewlis (in the same role Remus serves in this version) and Paul Bettany/Malcolm McDowell (in the same role that Sirius is in this one.)
It’s violent, heart-wrenching, eerie and oddly fun. The plot is involved, but unimportant. The reason why I keep reading and rereading this has nothing to do with the story, but rather with the fantastic language and completely amazingly good first person voice they have for Sirius Black. All should read.
And just like that, I'm in.
As the boys haul out twitching, itching Prewitt, I can't help but take another satisfied glance at my handiwork. Look at that, boys. Look at it real good. Take it in, that's right, I want to see it all, that wince on Pettigrew's puffy face when he gets his hands on those oozing postules, that glare through Potter's specs. Want to feel the heat of their glares, want to taste their apprehension when they brush me by.
That's right, fellows. Met your match, you have, all of you. Even Remus fucking Lupin, even if he don't know it yet. He will. Oh, he will.

This fic, like Gryffindor No. 1, has a very good Remus characterization, but is, nevertheless, totally focused on Sirius. In other fandoms, this fic would be considered only for the ship, but the character of Sirius Black is the important part of the pairing here. It explores his emotion and his problems with the relationship and is written from his point of view. This story covers from Sirius’ and Remus’ first meeting to when it all starts to fall apart, subverting the normal fluffy happy portrayal of the MWPP era for something more aggressive. Read this fic for the fantastic dialogue, if nothing else, but you have a lot of other reasons to read it.
This is not how things were supposed to happen. He is lost, confused, utterly thrown. No one has ever spoken to him like this before. They stare at each other for a long moment. “But I’m supposed to be in Slytherin.”
“And do you always do what’s expected?”
“What about you?” Sirius asks finally. “You don’t think you’re a Gryffindor either?”
“Oh,” says the boy. “I know I’m not.”
“So … what are you, then?”
“What are any of us? Meat, blood, and air.”
“That’s bollocks.” Sirius then comes to the type of abrupt decision that has categorized his life and will forever change his future. “Sirius Black,” he says, “making the best of it.” He sticks out his hand and grins. “No, scratch that. Charting his own course, for better or for worse.”
The boy hesitates only briefly. His fingers are long and callused, and he is stronger than he looks. “Remus Lupin,” he replies. “Unknown quantity.”
