This story is presented in a cool format that includes the liberal use of footnotes (make sure to read them all, they're fantastic), but the execution is just icing on the premise and characterization cake. This explains so much; this explains everything.

Deciding discretion was the better part of valor, John told Kim, the maid, that he was watching a friend’s dog for a few days, just until the friend recovered from a minor coma. Kim didn’t even roll her eyes at him, just sighed and said, “So what’s the dog’s name?”

To this day, John isn’t sure why he said, “Tootsie,” but he did, and the dog barked.

She slept on his feet for the rest of the week, and ate the little bits of bacon he slipped her under the table before school. When he came home, they’d go out back and play catch, and while he did his homework, she curled up next to him and watched him with her big, brown dog eyes like John was the coolest thing ever and if she fell asleep for a second, he’d disappear.

Then John’s dad got home, and Tootsie went back to her real family.

Or was it the stupidest, dumbest bit of non-luck of all: after he'd disobeyed the order to return to base, he'd touched ground to find that there was nobody alive left to save. If he'd come back with even one man, even if the guy had died en route, they'd have let him go with only a stern look and a grumble about how a casevac shouldn't cause more casualties. But there had been no one alive, no one even in enough pieces left to bring back without a Hefty bag, and he'd gotten his chopper shot up in the process. It had been minor damage, already repaired, but a punctured door was the least of his worries.

In the end, however, it wasn't really about luck. Somewhere between Kabul and Kuwait, he'd admitted the truth to himself. Even if he couldn't quite get himself to say the words aloud.
