Hey all! It's your friendly tags & memories moderator here. And this is going to be a quick post about tags.

It's going to be important once reccing begins that every post is tagged and tagged correctly to make it easier for our members to find what they are looking for.

What being tagged correctly will entail is that every post will be sorted by it's fandom claim and the prompt represented in the rec.


Example: If your claim is for Buffyverse Anya, and the stories recced are for prompt # 44, mask and prompt # 32, secrets; your tags should read as such.

tags- buffyverse: anya, prompt: mask, prompt: secrets.


We will be reminding people about tags as the process goes on, I'm sure. And if I've left a tag that you need off of the list of tags, please let me know so that I can correct the problem.

Good question! There are 2 ways.

1. While in the update window where you are posting your recs, there is a grey box under the window with a variety of user options. The first one should be tags, and then mood, location, music, etc. If you type in the first letters of the tag you want to attach to your post, the tag should show up. If you're looking for a "Harry Potter" tag you would type in "Ha" and a Harry Potter tag will show up. If that's the wrong one, erase the part that's wrong and start to type in the right one. For example if you've typed in "Ha" and "Harry Potter: Charlie Weasley" comes up and you wanted "Harry Potter: Severus Snape", simply erase the Charlie Weasley and type in "Se" instead. There's your "Harry Potter: Severus Snape" tag. Then you do the same thing for your Prompt tags. And then once you hit update, your post will be added to the community with the proper tags already in place. Or-

2. To get tags on your entry you could first make your post, hit update. Then you come over to [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]'s recent entries page. And on your post, at the top, there should be buttons for

You hit the tags button, and a list of pre-made tags should come up. And then you choose the ones that you need from the list. The prompts of your recs, the fandom that you're reccing in. Save at the bottom of the page once you've highlighted the ones that you want. Make sense? I hope so.

Absolutly idiotic question... but I've never really used tags in my entries... can you use 2 per entry? (Otherwise how do you go about recing 2 stories with different prompts?)

*lol* It's not idiotic. Tags confused me at first too. But you can use as many as you need per entry. 2 or 3 or whatever. I'm not sure if there is a limit.

It did... but heres another stupid question... I go to my journal, update, say I want to post in rec50 and then right where it says tags I have to type in my won... there isn't like a pre-ordained list of them... so would
Draco/Ginny -- Harry Potter fandom
work?

Is there supposed to be a pre-ordained list that just pops out of nowhere when you go to add the tags?

Okay, let's see if I can explain this. When you make your original post, there's no list that you can choose from. There is, however, a list of tags when you edit the tags into your post. So that's what you should do.

Therefore, to get tags on your entry you simply make your post, hit update. Then you come over to [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]'s recent entries page. And here, on your post it should say at the bottom:
edit | tags | leave a comment

You hit the tags button, and a list of pre-made tags should come up. And then you choose the ones that you need from the list. And "harry potter: draco/ginny" is definitely on that list already. I just checked it.

Okay, did that make any sense to you at all? Or should I try to explain it again?

Please tell me I am not being a moron! I just tried to add Harry Potter -Draco/Ginny and there really is only 4 options... SHould I delete the entry and wait until my head stops being so silly? (head/computer... whatever!)

Also, thanks for starting us off! And just for your information in the future, you don't have to link to your table of prompts in each post. chickpea did that to show people what the table should look like. Just saving you some work in the future. :)

I think we need someone who has posting access who isn't a maintainer to try it. Because I can see all of them. As far as I know, [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] could see all of them when she made her post. So I don't know if this is a singular problem or if it's something that's going to be a hassle for everyone. Yet.

Is it possible that only the tags we've used can be seen by the members? Maybe we should make a private post and use all of the tags, and see if that helps any.

Also, I've saved that first entry. You can work your linking magic.

It's telling me that I -

Also [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] says that she can see the draco/ginny prompt now that we used it. So I guess that was definitely the problem.

So I guess we either use all of the tags on an open post to get them up and running or we simply do all the tagging ourselves for awhile. I don't know. *lol*

Cool! At the moment, I have just left it with the 2 prompt tags... maybe someone on your end will be able to add that it's Draco/Ginny.

Thanks for all your help! I actually posted my table there because I noticed I wasn't on the big-bad list of claims (though I was approved for the claim and I linked to my table too - on the thread I was told to) so I just added it in case anyone tried to find me!

*giggles at being the first one* I am a bit randy to get started... I only have about 7 still to search for... I don't think 100 would be that hard now that I've done 43. :)

and yes... it so happens that I DO adore Draco/Ginny... *though you have to whisper it...* I started out as an Orange Crusher and the other H/G fans on my Flist are out for blood... I tried to tell them the Darkside had cookies... but they didn't care! ;)

(I'm actually a Cross-Shipper -- not to be confused with Cross-Dresser and most of the F7I girls don't care, but the OC's -- it chokes them to NO end! ;)

I don't know what's going on. I know that regular members can't add new tags. It should just be there already.

So what does it say when you click on the tags button? It's just your post and then a list of only 4 tags that you can choose from?

I'm only asking because I can see all of the tags. So I have no idea what might be happening on your end. But I'd like to fix it. *lol*

Ha Ha! I should actually read the comment before replying to it...

yeah, I only had the choice of the 4 tags... no others... but now that harry potter: Draco/Ginny has been added, I can see it on my choices. Maybe the private posting using all the tags would be a good idea! :) (Not that I have ANY clue what I'm doing! :) )

*lol* Thank you. I'm glad I could be of service.

And yeah, we're having weird tag issues I think. Because the lj help desk says that any member should be able to use all of the tags created by a maintainer. It doesn't say anything about them having to be used first. So I still don't know what's going on. But we're trying to fix it.

Also, why don't you run a flocked post with the tags. that way it limits the people who have to see it, lol.

Does anyone know if there's any way to filter one's friends list such that, for example, only rec50 posts with a given subset of tags (e.g. the QaF and admin tags) would appear? I really don't want to clutter my flist with recs for dozens of fandoms that don't interest me. Thanks!

I've never heard of a special tags filter for your f-list.

There's a regular f-list filter, where you put only those people and communities that you want to see everyday in a special group. And then you just check on all the comms that didn't make the filter sporadically.

Or I've noticed that several members at [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] have joined the community, but not added us to their f-list. I assume that they'll just come and search for the recs that please them at their leisure.

So I guess those are your best 2 options if you'd rather [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] wasn't clogging up your f-list. *g*

I put the tags on my post, but I don't see it listed on the right hand nav bar. I can't click on the stargate: atlantis link and see my recs. Is that an automatically generated tag listing, or is that something that a person has to maintain?

Okay, slight problem with the tag you requested. There's a character limit on the tag system.

So there's a "sheppard/mckay" tag and a "sheppard/mckay/beckett" tag. And you can use either or both of them as needed in your posts in the future.
