Brief summary: Set couple of years into the future. Written from John's POW, the story is about re-encounters and hope, past and future, and that how sometimes, not having someone phone number is a good thing.

“Colonel,” Rodney says, while they’re waiting for dessert. He lays his hand over the top of John’s glass. “John.”

John looks up and raises his eyebrows slowly, he’s not drunk, but if he were he thinks he might kiss Rodney right about now. Partly so they won’t have to have the conversation he can see brewing up behind Rodney’s eyes, but partly because he’s really, really missed Rodney and now he’s right here.

“Is this ever not going to be awkward?”

John doesn’t know, but he wants it to be. “Yes,” he says and makes himself smile. Rodney smiles back and after that their conversation still isn’t great, but it is better, and John is thankful for that.

John let go of him, and pulled himself upright on the bed, propping a pillow behind his back. Rodney climbed off the bed, and shot a glance backwards. John rearranged the covers over himself. “You coming back?” he asked casually.

“It’s late,” Rodney began, not looking at John.

“It’s so late that you might as well stay the rest of the night.” John watched his toes move underneath the covers.

“Oh! Yes, I hadn’t thought of it quite that way. Very logical. I will then,” Rodney babbled. “Stay, that is.”
