Brief summary: "Ryan is searching for something angry beneath everything that's beautiful, and Seth has too many questions." It is amazing what [livejournal.com profile] aflowerinrain can do with Seth, Ryan, and a book filled with questions. Her characterization is perfect, and her Ryan is so good it makes you ache. She laces the questions into the story in a way that makes them feel completely natural and perfect, and they're excellent ways for Seth and Ryan to learn more about each other.

+ “So… what did you do today?”

Ryan blinks.

“Right,” Seth replies. “That was a stupid question… you brooded.”

Ryan clears his throat. “What’d you do?”

“I went sailing. Summer called from France. She misses me, like, desperately. Seriously, she’s dying without me.”

Ryan kind of smiles, a little bit, maybe, and reaches for the PlayStation controllers. Seth would’ve liked more talking, but he’ll take what he can get, so for now he’s fine with settling for kicking Ryan’s ass at Tony Hawk.

+ Seth’s eyes fly open. Well, if this isn’t cliché, he doesn’t know what is. He’s on his side, with Ryan’s body spooned against his from behind. With Ryan’s arm over his hip, and Ryan’s nose against the nape of his neck. If it weren’t for the fact that Ryan is above the covers, and Seth is below the covers, they’d be touching, like, everywhere.

His heart is slamming against his chest. He just lies there for a good three seconds before he can’t stand it any more. He jumps out of bed, grabbing his jeans off of the floor, and bolts without looking back at Ryan.

He’s going sailing.

+ Seth squirms a little, crawling and stretching awkwardly so that he can grab the question book. He squints so that he can read it in the pale light of the moon. “Okay, this one’s appropriate. What do you do if you can’t sleep at night? Do you count sheep, toss and turn, or get up and try to do something productive?”

“I… I don’t know.”

“Uh-uh, Ryan. The first unwritten rule of the Seth-Ryan question game is that you have to answer. No “I don’t know” bullshit. Come on, it’s not that hard of a question.”

Ryan’s hand makes it’s way back to Seth’s arm and Seth is surprised to find that he’s glad to feel Ryan’s thumb moving over his skin, just beneath the sleeve of his t-shirt. “I… lately, I just watch you sleep. When I can’t.”
