This is actually a pre-HBP fic, but it fits our "stupid, noble" HBP-era Harry perfectly. Poseida does a great job with Harry's persona -- keeping him consistent with his canon characteristics, and also believable in a romantic relationship despite his "wangoballwime" tendencies.

The author communicates the distance between them in the beginning through her insightful inner monologues, as their feelings for each other begin to melt from professionalism into a more easy rapport -- and soon, tapping into the repressed emotions each has felt for the other. The case is the backdrop, and catalyst, for this change -- which comes to a head in a painfully honest, intense conversation after the case is done. Though Jack and Samantha don't actually "get back together" physically, it feels like they do, emotionally.
